WEEKEND in JAIPUR

Jaipur is a great weekend getaway for those living close by (Delhi/ NCR/ Agra etc). The highways are decent and it is easy and nice to drive down. If you are not interested in driving then you can take a deluxe bus or a Volvo from Delhi/ Agra. You can also take a train depending on the day of your journey.

DAY1 - Saturday:
So if you are coming for just the weekend and wanting to relax then try to reach jaipur by lunch. Check-in and have a nice lunch. There are many options for a great lunch, you can either have a quick one in the hotel or explore the EATING OUT section and select one to your liking.

Post lunch you can go to the old city also known as walled city and explore the bazaars. You can start at Bapu Bazaar and Saraogi Mansion. At Bapu Bazaar you will find textiles, local perfumes, shoes made of camel skin (jutties/ mojaries), Rajasthani trinkets, glass and lac bangles, bindi, imitation jewellery and bandhani/ bandhej fabrics. Bapu Bazaar also Houses the famous SARAOGI MANSION complex- that has many famous stores, known for Indian bridal trousseau. For handicrafts like puppets, bandahwars, wall hangings, white metal artifacts go to Linking Road - Bapu Bazar. For wonderful trousseau packing visit Ratan textile and a few tiny shops next to Ratan. When in bapu Bazar do not miss the golgappas and kulfi faluda.

Linking road-bapu bazaar
Linking road-bapu bazaar
Please note most of the markets remain close on Sunday, so if you have shopping in your agenda then make it a point to cover the bazaars on Saturday. Sometimes before diwali and high wedding season, some do stay open. But I won't take my chances!

Post Bapu Bazaar you can proceed to Johri Bazaar. Johari Bazaar is the one stop spot for jewellery and tie dye sarees, fabrics, suits, lehengas and textiles. Gopalji ka Rasta, and Haldiyon ka Rasta houses numerous establishments selling jewellery, gems, sweets, silverware etc. The Old city markets also remain closed on Sunday.

So far it has been a relaxing day and its almost evening by the time you are done at the bazaars. Now, its time for a unique Jaipur experience. For the evening, I recommend the Light & Sound Showin Jaipur. Amber Fort & Palace Complex, in Jaipur, holds the Light and sound show. The show is an attempt to revive the pride of Amber, bring forth the traditions that moulded the lives of its people, the pomp and show that once existed in its fullest form. It brings forth The spirit of Amber. This musical extravaganza has highlighted the local legends, folklore, and a connoisseur of folk music that continues to give Rajasthan its unique identity. The show has been set in a very exotic location with the panoramic view of the Amber Fort & Palace Complex in the front, the rising Jaigarh on the left, the hills at the back and the gallery itself in the Kesar Kiyari Complex of Maota lake. The Show runs on daily basis at 6:30 pm (Hindi Language ) and  in English at 07:30 pm.  This show is for 50 minutes. And approx Tariff for the Indian National is Rs.100 and Foreign nationals- Rs.200.

Post The Light and Sound show you can have dinner at 1135 A.D. A gorgeous restaurant set right inside Amber Fort, a truly royal location. The food is okay but, the ambiance and the experience is totally worth it. You will feel like royalty here.

Post dinner drive back to your hotel and have a good night’s sleep, cause Sunday will be a busy day.

DAY 2- Sunday:
Start the day early, say by 9:00 a.m. Have a filling breakfast at your hotel. If you are coming for the weekend it is recommended that you pre-book a package and make sure the deal includes breakfast. This will make life much easier.
Try to leave the hotel for sight-seeing by 9:30 or at the max 10:00 a.m. Now you know all about amber from last night. Now it’s time to see it all.

AMBER FORT: Here you can enjoy an Elephant ride. You can leave your car/ taxi at the lower parking area and take an elephant all the way up to The Amber Fort. The ride costs approx INR 1000 for one Elephant (2 persons can fit in one Elephant) and those are one way charges i.e. just to go up, to come back you will have to shell out the same amount.  If you are not interested in the elephant ride and don’t want to walk all the way up there is a way to go all the way up-to the main entrance.
Amber Fort
Amber Fort
Just a bit ahead of where people take the elephants from is a narrow lane, just go up that lane (in your car/ taxi) and take a parking ticket for 30 INR. The car can be parked close to the entrance while you can finish your sightseeing. Stop 2: JAIGARH FORT: This rugged fort is also known as Victory Fort and houses the largest canon on Wheels in the world- Jaibaan. You can get some gorgeous views from jaigarh. Many movies are shot here, concerts held here and weddings hosted year after year. Read more about Jaigarh on my tripadvisor review page: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g304555-d325116-r114643001-Jaigarh_Fort-Jaipur_Rajasthan.html

Stop 3: CITY PALACE OF JAIPUR: If you still have time and energy left you can cover The city palace. The City palace is a great mix of traditional Rajasthani & Mughal Architecture. Within the City Palace, you can see the textile and costume museum, arms and armour museum, art gallery and hall of public and private audience. Please Note: The City Palace and S.M.S II Museum. Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Again they have great audio guides in many languages and it makes a lot of sense to take one and then tour the palace. Read more about City Palace on my tripadvisor review page: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g304555-d324468-r25078887-City_Palace_of_Jaipur-Jaipur_Rajasthan.html

At this point of time, if you are really hungry then you can grab a quick bite at The Palace Cafe and proceed for the next stop.

Stop 4: JANTAR MANTAR: This is an 18th century Observatory and is great for those who have not been to The Jantar Mantar at Delhi. The architecture is very interesting and it’s a great learning /educational experience. There are audio guides available at the ticket counter in various languages, must take one if you are not taking a guide otherwise nothing will make sense!

Stop 5: HAWA MAHAL/ THE PALACE OF WIND: HAWA MAHAL- Palace of Winds, is the most recognizable monument of Jaipur and for many it has become the symbol of JAIPUR. You don’t need to spend too much time here. Just click a few pictures of facade and explore from outside. There isn’t much inside, except the views of old city and missing that isn’t that big a deal. Read more about Hawa mahal on my tripadvisor review page: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g304555-d317345-r121412884-Hawa_Mahal_Palace_of_Wind-Jaipur_Rajasthan.html

If you have not grabbed a bite at The Palace cafe at The City Palace of Jaipur, then by the time you finish the Forts & Palace, it will time for lunch. Now there are 2 ways to go about it: ONE- The Touristy way, where you stay close to the sightseeing area and go to a place like LMB (Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar) or one of the many restaurants at M.I. Road. (Moti Mahal Deluxe (Non-Veg), Dasaprakasa (Veg), Niros (Non Veg), Surya Mahal (Veg), Natraj (Veg), Handi (Non Veg), KFC, McDonalds etc.)

LMB: I personally feel, this is over-rated. The Ghevar is great here but the food on the whole is average. However its located very close to the main sight-seeing stuff, so one can grab a quick lunch and get going. Read more about LMB on my tripadvisor review page: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g304555-d2073244-r115744520-Laxmi_Mishthan_Bhandar_LMB_Restaurant-Jaipur_Rajasthan.html

TWO- You can relax a bit and go for a nice leisurely lunch at a great food place. Read the section on Eating Out/ Recommendations; also see the pictures of each of the suggested places and take a call accordingly.

After lunch, I strongly recommend a nap. So go back to the hotel and chill for a bit. For the evening you can either opt for dinner in the hotel or Read the section on Eating Out/ Recommendations; also see the pictures of each of the suggested places and take a call accordingly.

I personally like (in no order of preference):
The buffet dinner at Marriot (Global cuisine),
The Indian Spice (Great Indian Food) at The Country Inn & Suites,
Jammie’s Kitchen (great Indian & continental Cuisine)
Haandi (Awesome Indian & rajasthani cuisine)

JAIPUR FOR SINGLES:

Jaipur is a great fun city if you are single and wanting to visit with a bunch of friends. There is a lot of sight-seeing to do, a lot of great food places and there are a few fun places for having a blast at night.
If you haven’t come by road and don’t have your own transport you can hire a private cab or use radio taxi or just hop on hop off using auto rickshaws and see jaipur.
Choosing the right accommodation is the key to having a good time! If you are on a budget then you can look at hotels in M.I. road and Bunny park area. There are great options in these areas that are pocket friendly yet clean and comfortable.
If you have a mid range budget then you can look at hotels like Maya Mansion, The Saneer, Bella Casa, Fortune Metropolitan, Royal Orchid etc.
Wanting high end accommodation, then The Ram Bagh, Jai Mahal Palace, The Marriot, The Trident, Rajputana Sheraton, Country Inn & Suites are a few options.
Here is an itinerary for single boys wanting to spend a weekend or just 2 nights for fun in jaipur:

It is best to see the Hawa Mahal’s facade there isn’t much inside except the views of the busy walled city. Timing: 10.00 a.m. to 16.30 hrs, Entry Fee Rs. 10/- for Indian Nationals and Rs.30/- for foreign nationals.
HAWA MAHAL

JANTAR MANTAR: Built in 18th century, this observatory houses lots of life sized instruments, many of which were used to study the movement of constellations and stars in the sky. You can take a guide or an audio guide to understand the instruments better. Timing: 9.00 to 16.30 hrs, Entry Fee: Rs. 40/- for Indian Nationals & Rs. 200/- for Foreign nationals. There is an additional charge (nominal) for the audio guide. THE CITY PALACE

This is all that one can do in terms of sight-seeing on day1. Post all the sightseeing:
SINGLE MEN:
If you are a group of single boys, then head back to your hotel and take a nap or chill. If you want to buy some drinks and carry to your hotel then note that the liquor shops in jaipur close by 8:00 P.M.so make sure to buy before-hand.

SINGLE GIRLS:
If you are a group of girls then shopping is fun and a good idea. You can start with the area near hawa mahal. You can find handicraft items, Mojaries (Typical Rajasthani- hand crafted shoes), clothes, bed sheets etc. On the round-about close to Hawa mahal are 2 great stores for buying cotton kurtis and salwar kurtis. Gulab Chand and Bombaywalla.
Post this you can move to Johri Bazaar and look for some gems and jewellery. When you are done with Johri Bazaar and if you still have the energy to shop more then, go to Bapu Bazar for knick-knacks, souvenirs, mojaries (the typical rajasthni footwear), quilts, bangles, cotton kurtis, cheap jewellery, puppets, handicraft items etc etc. Make sure you bargain to get the best deal!
The shops here are open till about 8:30p.m/ 9:00p.m. You can also find henna artistes sitting by the road and can get a tattoo done on one hand for approximately 100 Rupees.

At the entry of Bapu Bazar is Saraogi Mansion which houses the big Saree Emporiums- Nikhaar fashions, Pratapsons, Utsav and Parineeta. You can also find the Bnaraswala store here for exclusive hand weaves as well as many varieties of running fabrics from bananras/ Varanasi and other places. At the basement of Saraogi Mansion are many stores selling beautiful footwear, handbags, bangles and cosmetics.
Post shopping if you are too tired then just go to the hotel and order room service. Or you can go back to the hotel for a couple of hours and then go out for dinner. Read the EATING OUT SECTION and choose from one of the many places to eat in. If you go out in night then make sure to pre-book a cab through the hotel or book a radio taxi as they are safe. Avoid tuk-tuks in the night. Not that they are unsafe but why take a chance.

NIGHT LIFE OPTIONS: OK so you have had a long day but when you are out with friends having a great evening is important.

If you want a lounge kind of set up with great drinks and a unique ambience then The Steam (pub on wheels)- at The Taj Rambagh Palace is the best place. It’s not full of people and relatively subtle and classy. The prices are a bit on the higher side cause it’s The Taj Rambagh. But this is a great place for those who want to talk and enjoy a couple of drinks at a unique place.

Kasbah: The Lounge at Country inn & suites is again a great place to have wood fired pizzas, Lebanese food and a few other Mediterranean dishes along with drinks. The setting is very middle-eastern and there are large screens to watch sports. Again Kasbah is not a very crowded place.

B2B (Back to Basic): The disc at Country inn & suites. They do not allow stags and the entry closes at 12:00a.m. The disc is on till about 2:00a.m. This place has loud music, lots of crowd and is good for those looking to dance and have a few drinks. Its lively on weekends and not so happening on weekdays. B2B has been now closed (2013 dec) and been converted into a Hip Lounge called- 'The Duplay'.

The Grunge: The disc is located at The Fern. Again pulsating music, lots of crowd. Good on weekends.

TC: Located at the basement of Hotel Shikha, right next to the Deer park is a rock pub. Serves great food (continental, Chinese, Indian etc) and has loud rock music and a lot of drinks options. It’s very loud and crowded and is open to stags too. The place is mostly frequented by young crowd.

Tablu: Located at the roof-top of Clark’s Amer Hotel. This is a open air lounge serving great drinks and quick bites as well as platters. Great over the weekends, Tablu is buzzing with a great mix of people, nice music and is a great lounge to people watch and have a wonderful evening.

Club Naila: Located at Naila Bagh Palace, Moti Doongri Road. Naila hosts cool pool-parties on weekends through the summer. The entry is pricey which ensures safe and good crowd. The pool parties go on till almost 3:00 a.m. has great music, loads of people and a great atmosphere. Other season they keep hosting events from time to time. Check with Naila to figure what’s going on during your visit. Call: +91-99 83 510001 Or 141-260 7492

Lounge Maya: The lounge is situated in the basement area of Hotel Maya Mansion. The building also constitutes two well-known restaurants of Jaipur, Handi and Copper Chimney. The USP of They offer a decent selection of drinks and the menu has Indian, continental and Chinese fare. Maya is not very crowded but a nice place to grab a quick drink and a quick bite!

Oxygen & Recycle: Located in Doda’s palace Hotel, raja park. This is a combination of 2 places. Recycle is the open space usually hosting bands and concerts and Oxygen in the lounge bar. Its busy over the weekends and nice for a few drinks.

DAY 2:
Well you are here for a vacation so sleep in till late and leave your hotel for a day of sight-seeing by 12:00 p.m.
JAIGARH FORT: The fort, rugged and similar in structural design to the Amber Fort, is also known as Victory Fort and houses the largest canon on Wheels in the world- Jaibaan.
JAIGARH FORT

AMBER FORT & PALACE: Here you can enjoy an Elephant ride. Leave your transport at the lower parking and take an elephant up to The Amber Fort. The ride will cost you approx INR 1000 for one Elephant (2 persons can fit in one Elephant) and those are the one way charges i.e. just to go up, to come back you will have to shell out the same amount. Amber Fort was built by Maharaja Man Singh in the 17th century. You can finish these 2 Forts in approx 3 hours.
AMBER FORT

If you have driven down from Delhi/ NCR and checked-out this morning. Post finishing Amber you can head back to the Natioanl highway and leave for Delhi.

If you are still spending the night in city then head back towards jaipur and enjoy the evening by eating at one of the many famous restaurants or just stay in the hotel and relax.

JAIPUR WITH FAMILY:

If you are planning a Jaipur trip with family and do not want to rush then 3 Nights and 4 Days is necessary. However, most people are only able to manage 3 Nights-2 days and to me that is too short to cover a place as gorgeous and full of activities as jaipur, but sometimes when you are travelling and wanting to cover a country that is the maximum you can spend at one location. So here are some suggestions to make the most of your time.

When travelling with the family, picking the right location to stay is very important. It will be great to stay on the M.I. Road as there are many restaurants here as well it leads to most of the historical sites. If that does not work out then you may look at hotels on The JLN Marg or Tonk Road- again 2 major roads that run through the city and have great connectivity and loads of hotels in every budget and every category possible.
For your packing needs, you may want to chk the weather of Jaipur on http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/VIJP/2012/07/17/DailyHistory.html

And read my article regarding packing for jaipur on: http://thejaipurguide.blogspot.in/search/label/packing%20for%20jaipur%20vacation

STOP 3: NAHARGARH FORT: Nahargarh is mostly in ruins and is no-where as grand as Amber but if you are very keen on history then go ahead and see Nahargarh. However if you have had your dose of forts then skipping Nahargarh is perfectly OK.

JAL MAHAL: After the dose of Forts, drive down to Jal Mahal. Jal Mahal also known as "The Water Palace" for a photo session. The Jal Mahal is a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake. The palace and the lake around it were renovated and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber. The palace is being converted into a resort and will very soon open to general public via a boat ride.
JAL MAHAL

If you have missed the City Palace on Day 1, you can cover it after Jal Mahal. Refer to more details on city palace on day1 part of the itinerary.

By the time you finish the Forts & Palace, it will time for lunch. Now there are 2 ways to go about it: ONE- The Touristy way, where you stay close to the sightseeing area and go to a place like LMB (Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar) or one of the many restaurants at M.I. Road. (Moti Mahal Deluxe (Non-Veg), Dasaprakasa (Veg), Niros (Non Veg), Surya Mahal (Veg), Natraj (Veg), Handi (Non Veg), KFC, McDonalds etc.) LMB: I personally feel, this is over-rated. BAPU BAZAR: Go to Bapu Bazar for souvenirs, quilts, bangles, cotton kurtis and suits, knick-knacks, mojaries (the typical rajasthani footwear), cheap jewellery, puppets, handicraft items etc. Make sure you bargain & haggle to get the best deal! The shops here are open till about 8:30p.m/ 9:00p.m. You can also find henna (mehendi) artistes sitting by the road and can get a henna tattoo done on one hand for approximately 100 Rupees.

If you want more shopping go to Saraogi Mansion at the entry of Bapu Bazar and you will find all the big Saree Emporiums- Nikhaar fashions, Pratapsons, Utsav etc here. At the basement level of Saraogi Mansion are many stores selling beautiful footwear, handbags, bangles, nightwear and cosmetics.

Saffron at Marriot for wonderful Rajasthani & Awdhi cuisine

1135 Ad for a royal ambience and typical rajasthani pre-fixed menu

Steam at The Rambagh Palace for a quiet evening at an unique ambience with global food

Spice Court- for a not very expensive dinner with a large selection of Rajasthani Fare. You can also find a few continental selections here and in winters there are cultural shows or puppets shows every evening.

Dragon House at The Country Inn & Suites: Although many restaurants serve Chinese but the most authentic one is DRAGON HOUSE: Country Inn & Suites, Khasa Kothi Circle, M.I. Rd. Slightly expensive but worth every penny. The ambiance is very oriental and the food delectable.

Peshawari at Rajputana Sheraton: This is a high end Restaurant. An average meal for 3 without drinks will cost you INR 3000+ taxes. The Menu is not very elaborate but the food and ambience amazing.

Handi: I have been going to Handi for the past 10 yrs now. This was one of the only non-veg places (apart from Niros) jaipur had till just a few years back. HANDI is a place for the non-pretentious. It is no fine dining restaurant and do not go with that expectation. It spells, Good Food at a great price at the heart of the city! By the time you finish seeing City Palace it will be time for lunch. So I recommend you go to johri bazaar by a bicycle rickshaw or Auto rickshaw. On way you will see the HAWA MAHAL’s facade. HAWA MAHAL- Palace of Winds, has become the Symbol of Jaipur and is an architectural marvel. For more on Hawa Mahal read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawa_Mahal Click your shots and then proceed for a traditional Rajasthani Lunch at LMB restaurant. Its nothing fancy and is a vegetarian restaurant but serves some nice rajasthani dishes. Yes its not fancy but price wise it is not cheap. Try the world famous Ghewar when at LMB- mind you its extremely sweet and made with a lot of clarified butter. Diabetics, watch out!!!
HAWA MAHAL

By the time you have had your lunch its already evening. If you are exhausted, post lunch take a nap and then by evening have dinner at one of the many options recommended a few paragraphs down the article.

If you still have the enthusiasm and energy left then straight after lunch, leave for some retail therapy. Go to Bapu Bazar, very close to Johri Bazaar for knick-knacks, souvenirs, mojaries (the typical rajasthni footwear), quilts, bangles, cotton kurtis, cheap jewellery, puppets, handicraft items etc etc. Make sure you bargain to get the best deal!

The shops here are open till about 8:30p.m/ 9:00p.m. You can also find henna artistes sitting by the road and can get a tattoo done on one hand for approximately 100 Rupees.

If you want more shopping go to Saraogi Mansion at the entry of Bapu Bazar and you have the big Saree Emporiums- Nikhaar fashions, Pratapsons, Utsav and my favourite Parineeta. You can also find the Bnaraswala store here for exclusive hand weaves of bananras/ Varanasi. At the basement of Saraogi Mansion are many stores selling beautiful footwear, handbags, bangles and cosmetics.

Post Shopping go back to the hotel, relax for a bit and then in the evening, say by 8:00p.m. leave for dinner. You can explore one of the many restaurants of M.I. Road for Dinner. Some of M.I. Road restaurants:

Weekend in Jaipur (with Family)

2 Days is too short to cover a place as gorgeous and full of Heritage as JAIPUR but sometimes when you are travelling and wanting to cover a country as diverse and huge as India that is the maximum you can spend at one location. So here are some suggestions to make the most of your time.

When travelling with the family, picking the right location to stay is very important. M.I. Road, Hathroi Fort, Bunny Park are a few areas that lie right at the heart of the city and very close to most of the sight-seeing. That said Raja Park and Moti Doongri area are very central too. Pick from one of the many hotels in these areas so sightseeing becomes very convenient.

For your packing needs, you may want to check my previous posts on this blog:

SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR 2 DAYS IN JAIPUR:
DAY1: Check into the hotel, Change and go around the hotel property to explore the hotel so you can decide what all parts of the hotel you would like to spend time in. Further go to the Walled City and see The HAWA MAHAL- it is the most recognizable monument of Jaipur and for many it has become the symbol of JAIPUR.  Post Hawa Mahal, visit The JANTAR MANTAR- an 18th century Observatory. Please not both these monuments are open between 10:00 a.m. to 16:30 p.m.
HAWA MAHAL

Following this you can go to johri bazaar by a bicycle rickshaw or Auto rickshaw and have a traditional Rajasthani Lunch at LMB restaurant. Its nothing fancy and is a vegetarian restaurant but serves some nice rajasthani dishes (a lot of people want to try typical rajasthani food and this place has exactly that to offer). Try the world famous Ghewar when at LMB- as mentioned earlier, its extremely sweet and made with a lot of clarified butter. Health conscious, watch out!!!
If you are not interested in a vegetarian Rajasthani meal then go to The PALACE CAFE at the City palace of Jaipur. This is a multi cuisine restaurant and you will get burgers and fries to pastas as well. I used to particularly love the Spaghetti Bolognese but its been over a year since I have gone to the palace cafe, so cannot comment much about the taste. Post Lunch if you still have some time in hand- try to see The City Palace and S.M.S II Museum. Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. *CLOSED ON SUNDAYS. *Subject to change: Earlier it opened through the year and shut only on Holi and Diwali, but recently a few of my guests faced the issue on Sunday.
