MUST SEE THINGS WITH KIDS:
DAY1:
A visit to Amber Fort & Palace is a must do in while in Jaipur with kids. Amber was the ancient capital of the state of Dhundhar. Its construction began in the 11th century and further enhancements were made gradually from time to time. It is a magnificent blend of Rajput and Muslim architecture. Amber fort is one of the most well preserved forts in India and even after centuries remain glorious. Once upon a time it was the palace where the Rajput Maharajas and their families lived.

At the entrance to the palace there is a beautiful temple dedicated to Sila Devi. The Amber Fort is an opulent palace complex made of red sandstone and marble. It consists of the Diwan-e-Aam meaning the "Hall of Public Audience", the Diwan-e-Khas meaning the "Hall of Private Audience", the Sheesh Mahal (a gorgeous mirror palace)/ Jai Mandir, and the Sukh Niwas where a cool climate is artificially created by winds that blow over the water cascading within the palace.

Amber is a must add to your Jaipur sightseeing itinerary. It lights up magnificently at night, making jaipur even more beautiful. You can take an audio guide to better understand the structures and history. Also in the evenings there is a light and sound show that has amber as the backdrop and is a must attend to know more about the heritage and history.

ALICE GARG NATIONAL SEASHELL MUSEUM: A visit to the Shell Museum is a nice break from the temples, palaces and forts when travelling with children. This is a very unique thing to do with kids while in Jaipur.

GALTAJI MONKEY TEMPLE: If you are a Non-Indian National then you may visit the Monkey Temple. Head to Monkey Temple early in the morning or at sundown, this is when the monkeys are most active. The ruins of this temple are full of mischievous monkeys. Please keep a close eye on the kids and make sure they don't try to touch the monkeys. Toddlers, children and teenagers would love the experience.

CHOKHI DHANI: Dinner at Chokhi Dhani is one of the best things to do in Jaipur with kids. Although its a bit touristy- children can enjoy the shows, folk dances, camel and elephant rides, puppet shows, magic shows, snake charmers and more! Chokhi Dhani is modelled on a typical village fair of Rajasthan. For all the foreign tourists who expect a village in rajasthan to be like one in Europe- please do not go there!! It is more of a cultural experience, great for those who have an open mind.

WEEKEND IN JAIPUR:

Jaipur is a great weekend getaway for those living close by (Delhi/ NCR/ Agra etc). The highways are decent and it is easy and nice to drive down. If you are not interested in driving then you can take a deluxe bus or a Volvo from Delhi/ Agra. You can also take a train depending on the day of your journey.

DAY1 – Saturday:
So if you are coming for just the weekend and wanting to relax then try to reach jaipur by lunch. Check-in and have a nice lunch. There are many options for a great lunch, you can either have a quick one in the hotel or explore the EATING OUT section and select one to your liking.

Post lunch you can go to the old city also known as walled city and explore the bazaars. You can start at Bapu Bazaar and Saraogi Mansion. At Bapu Bazaar you will find textiles, local perfumes, shoes made of camel skin (jutties/ mojaries), Rajasthani trinkets, glass and lac bangles, bindi, imitation jewellery and bandhani/ bandhej fabrics. Bapu Bazaar also Houses the famous SARAOGI MANSION complex- that has many famous stores, known for Indian bridal trousseau. For handicrafts like puppets, bandahwars, wall hangings, white metal artifacts go to Linking Road - Bapu Bazar. For wonderful trousseau packing visit Ratan textile and a few tiny shops next to Ratan. When in bapu Bazar do not miss the golgappas and kulfi faluda.
Linking Road- BAPU BAZAAR
Please note most of the markets remain close on Sunday, so if you have shopping in your agenda then make it a point to cover the bazaars on Saturday. Sometimes before diwali and high wedding season, some do stay open. But I won't take my chances!

Post Bapu Bazaar you can proceed to Johri Bazaar. Johari Bazaar is the one stop spot for jewellery and tie dye sarees, fabrics, suits, lehengas and textiles. Gopalji ka Rasta, and Haldiyon ka Rasta houses numerous establishments selling jewellery, gems, sweets, silverware etc. The Old city markets also remain closed on Sunday.

So far it has been a relaxing day and its almost evening by the time you are done at the bazaars. Now, its time for a unique Jaipur experience. For the evening, I recommend the Light & Sound Show in Jaipur. Amber Fort & Palace Complex, in Jaipur, holds the Light and sound show. The show is an attempt to revive the pride of Amber, bring forth the traditions that moulded the lives of its people, the pomp and show that once existed in its fullest form. It brings forth The spirit of Amber. This musical extravaganza has highlighted the local legends, folklore, and a connoisseur of folk music that continues to give Rajasthan its unique identity. The show has been set in a very exotic location with the panoramic view of the Amber Fort & Palace Complex in the front, the rising Jaigarh on the left, the hills at the back and the gallery itself in the Kesar Kiyari Complex of Maota lake. The Show runs on daily basis at 6:30 pm (Hindi Language ) and  in English at 07:30 pm  This show is for 50 minutes. And approx Tariff for the Indian National is Rs.100 and Foreign nationals Rs.200.

Post The Light and Sound show you can have dinner at 1135 A.D. A gorgeous restaurant set right inside Amber Fort, a truly royal location. The food is okay but, the ambiance and the experience is totally worth it. You will feel like royalty here.
Light & sound show

Post dinner drive back to your hotel and have a good night’s sleep, cause Sunday will be a busy day.

DAY 2 – Sunday:
Start the day early, say by 9:00 a.m. Have a filling breakfast at your hotel. If you are coming for the weekend it is recommended that you pre-book a package and make sure the deal includes breakfast. This will make life much easier.
Try to leave the hotel for sight-seeing by 9:30 or at the max 10:00 a.m. Now you know all about amber from last night. Now its time to see it all.

AMBER FORT: Here you can enjoy an Elephant ride. You can leave your car/ taxi at the lower parking area and take an elephant all the way up to The Amber Fort. The ride costs approx INR 1000 for one Elephant (2 persons can fit in one Elephant) and those are one way charges i.e. just to go up, to come back you will have to shell out the same amount.  If you are not interested in the elephant ride and don’t want to walk all the way up there is a way to go all the way up-to the main entrance.

Just a bit ahead of where people take the elephants from is a narrow lane, just go up that lane (in your car/ taxi) and take a parking ticket for 30 INR. The car can be parked close to the entrance while you can finish your sightseeing. Stop 3: CITY PALACE OF JAIPUR: If you still have time and energy left you can cover The city palace. The City palace is a great mix of traditional Rajasthani & Mughal Architecture. Withinthe City Palace, you can see the textile and costume museum, arms and armour museum, art gallery and hall of public and private audience. Please Note: The City Palace and S.M.S II Museum. Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Again they have great audio guides in many languages and it makes a lot of sense to take one and then tour the palace. CITY PALACE

At this point of time, if you are really hungry then you can grab a quick bite at The Palace Cafe and proceed for the next stop.

Stop 4:  JANTAR MANTAR:  This is an 18th century Observatory and is great for those who have not been to The Jantar Mantar at Delhi. The architecture is very interesting and it’s a great learning /educational experience. There are audio guides available at the ticket counter in various languages, must take one if you are not taking a guide otherwise nothing will make sense!
JANTAR MANTAR

Stop 5: HAWA MAHAL/ THE PALACE OF WIND:  HAWA MAHAL- Palace of Winds, is the most recognizable monument of Jaipur and for many it has become the symbol of JAIPUR. You don’t need to spend too much time here. Just click a few pictures of facade and explore from outside. There isn’t much inside, except the views of old city and missing that isn’t that big a deal. Read more about Hawa mahal on my tripadvisor review page: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g304555-d317345-r121412884-Hawa_Mahal_Palace_of_Wind-Jaipur_Rajasthan.html
HAWA MAHAL

If you have not grabbed a bite at The Palace cafe at The City Palace of Jaipur, then by the time you finish the Forts & Palace, it will time for lunch. Now there are 2 ways to go about it: ONE- The Touristy way, where you stay close to the sightseeing area and go to a place like LMB (Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar) or one of the many restaurants at M.I. Road. (Moti Mahal Deluxe (Non-Veg), Dasaprakasa (Veg), Niros (Non Veg), Surya Mahal (Veg), Natraj (Veg), Handi (Non Veg), KFC, McDonalds etc.)

LMB: I personally feel, this is over-rated. The Ghevar is great here but the food on the whole is average. However its located very close to the main sight-seeing stuff, so one can grab a quick lunch and get going. Read more about LMB on my tripadvisor review page: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g304555-d2073244-r115744520-Laxmi_Mishthan_Bhandar_LMB_Restaurant-Jaipur_Rajasthan.html

TWO- You can relax a bit and go for a nice leisurely lunch at a great food place. Read the section on Eating Out/ Recommendations; also see the pictures of each of the suggested places and take a call accordingly.

After lunch, I strongly recommend a nap. So go back to the hotel and chill for a bit. For the evening you can either opt for dinner in the hotel or Read the section on Eating Out/ Recommendations; also see the pictures of each of the suggested places and take a call accordingly.

I personally like:
The buffet dinner at Marriot (Global cuisine),
The Indian Spice (Great Indian Food) at The Country Inn & Suites,
Jammie’s Kitchen (great Indian & continental Cuisine)
Haandi (Awesome Indian & rajasthani cuisine)

ITALIAN FOOD THAT WON’T BURN A HOLE IN YOUR POCKET

A couple of weeks back noticed this little restaurant while crossing rajput sabha bhavan and wondered what the place is like. So last Saturday we decided to check out the place. Mamma Mia is located just opp Rajput Sabha bhavan and just a few mtrs from Rajmandir.

I was pleasantly surprised by the small yet elegant set-up.

MAMMA MIA FACADE

THE INTERIORS

PART of MENU

PART of MENU

The menu is elaborate and offers pastas, Pizzas, Risottos, soups, salads and a lot of seafood dishes. What I liked about the food is that it is not cheesy. Most of the local Italian places i have been to serves food where the primary ingredient is cheese. With food at Mamma mia, you will taste texture, herbs, cheese as well as savour the ingredients. Its all nicely balanced.

The wait staff told me that the chef is Indian but was in Italy for decades and is now running the restaurant here.

We had ordered a Ravioli in meat sauce, A tagliatelle, A grilled fish and a pizza. Loved the Fish and the ravioli. The tagliatelle was OK and the pizza was fine but the fish really stood out.

RAVIOLI

PIZZA With HAM & MUSHROOMS

AWESOME FISH

TAGLIATELLE

The bill was for 1900 INR approx which for so much food is decent. So, If you are looking for Italian without paying a bomb, this place is worth a try.

TOP STREET FOOD OPTIONS JAIPUR 2016

GOLGAPPAS/ FUCHKAS/ PANI PATASHI/ PANI PURI: known by many names this is a popular Indian fast food/ street snack. There are 3 places in Jaipur, where Golgappas are just great. In order of personal preference but all are top choices:

·         HOTEL CHAWLA’S (earlier known as Chawla’s Sweets): 349, Fashion Street, Lane No.1, Raja Park, Jaipur. I Love the Golgappas at chawla. Its just the right amount of spicy, tangy & sweet. I don’t miss the Bengali market (Delhi) Golgappas anymore.

·         NAND’S: Right Opposite Chawla’s. Fashion Street, Lane No.1, Raja Park, Jaipur. The shop opens at 4:00 P.M. and goes on till he is all sold out.

Hogging time!!!

Nand's Golgappa

·         GOPALJI: is now near ahimsa circle-Outside, the same building as Mamu's Infusion. Its a small and clean kiosk. This one is loved by the old timers and is very popular. Also known as Gopalji from Ramniwas Bagh behind Kiran Cafe. They also have a pav bhaji couter, bhel puri counter and a gola chuski counter.

SANJAY’S OMELETTE:B-18-19, Janta Store, Bapu Nagar, Jaipur. You must be thinking, what’s in an omelette??? Try one form the 20+ varieties available at Sanju’s (Sanjay’s omelette) and you will know. Sanjay Omelette is owned by Mr. Sanjay sharma, who was also one of the participants of Masterchef India and has been serving to students and locals in Jaipur for over 2 decades. This is a small eatery at the janta store circle market, Bapu Nagar. When you reach this place you will wonder what it is. There will be many cars parked all around and all you need to do is ‘HONK’ or call out to one of the servers.
Some guy will rush to you and ask you to place your order. Omelettes start at 60 INR but are really filling and unique. I am attaching a picture of the menu card, so you know all the stuff available here. This is not a fancy place at all- its just a tiny stall full of eggs and people but a food lover must not miss this place!

THE FAMOUS PYAAZ KI KACHORI: Steaming hot pyaz ki kachoris or aloo pyaz ki kachoris are sold at most ‘mithai/ namkeen’ shops across Jaipur. When in Jaipur this signature dish is a must try. Pyaaz kachori has a crisp, flaky, deep fried crust; stuffed with a lightly caramalised and exceptionally seasoned onion filling.  RAWAT MISHTHAN BHANDAR is the most famous and the BEST in all of Jaipur for Pyaaz Kachori. It is right next to the polo victory cinema, very close to the Sindhi camp bus stand and main railway station.
pyaaz ki kachori

DAAL KACHORI: Steaming hot Little daal ki kachoris are sold at many shops across Jaipur but one of the popular one is Sampat Kachori Bhandar. Daal Kachori, similar to Pyaaz kachori has a crisp, flaky, deep fried crust; stuffed with a spicy lentil filling.  SAMPAT KACHORI BHANDAR is tucked away in a little street in the old walled, SBBJ Street Chaura Rasta, serves hot kachoris all day long. Worth a Try!!

SETHI’S BARBEQUE RESTAURANT: Near Panchawati Circle, Raja Park & Gold Souk-Malviya Nagar. one of my favrioute hangouts for years now. The days we do not want fine dining or are in a hurry or in a mood to have some great tandoori in our car...Its sethi’s we got to. Its like a dhaba, they have a sit down options but its an absolute no no for girls to go in and eat. So we always order and then eat inside the car. You reach sethi and usually see cars parked back to back. Post parking someone always notices you and comes with the menu card to take your order. It has a decent variety on its menu. But highly recommended are: The Lahsooni chicken Tikka. It is by far the world’s best tikka! When you order ask for separate masala and lemon wedges. These awesome tikkas melt into your mouth and leave a taste you will not be able to forget ever!! Have it with crispy Tandoori roti and the masala. Add the lemon juice to the masala and dip every morsel of tikka and roti into the masala for the heavenly taste!! The other thing we always order is haryali chicken tikka, not the best in town but still really good and along with this ask him to get you only gravy/ rogan of chicken or some daal. The bill won’t be more than 550 Indain Rupees for a plate of lehsuni Tikka + a plate of haryali Tikka+ one daal+ one gravy+ 4 tandoori rotis. So, if you are a food (non-veg) lover and like to explore then sethi's is a must visit.
Sethi's facade

TALK OF THE TOWN: Opp Country Inn & Suites, Khasa Kothi, M.I. Road & also a little shop near Gaurav Tower. This is also a take away or eat in car. Has a lot of stuff on menu but highly recommended are: Hariyali Chiken Tikka- The best Hariyali tikka you will ever eat. Tandoori Aaloo, Kathi Roll, Biryani and Butter Chicken.
LASSIWALA: One of the most famed places serving lassi, lassiwala is located on M.I. Road almost opposite Niros Restaurant. If you are wondering what lassi is? Lassi is curd blended with ice and sugar (Metthi Lassi) or sometimes blended with salt (Namkeen Lassi) served in earthen pots. The lassiwala is famous for its sweet lassi (meethi lassi).
When you reach the location you will find three lassiwala shops, if you carefully look at them you will notice that only the one towards the extreme left (just befor shyam caterers) does business till late afternoon (4 PM) is the original lassiwala. Be sure that you go to this one, it’s board clearly reads that it has been there since 1944. The other outlets although very good on their own are not quite at the same level. Note, There is no seating place at Lassiwala so you have to have the Lassi while standing on the street. The lassi is available in two sizes, large and small. Cheap, no frills and tasty- Lassiwala is a great street place. Be sure to reach before 1:00 PM in the afternoon else you may be too late as the Lassi runs out before 4:00 PM everyday and even earlier on most days of the week.
The one with the black board is the original one
The Original Lassiwala- all lassi sold by 4PM- while fake guys are still selling
KATHI ROLLS & TANDOORI TIKKAS AT M.I. ROAD: located opposite KFC (almost 50 mtrs before KFC on the opp side of road). There are a 2/3 shops serving Kathi rolls, tandoori chicken, Paneer tikka and a variety of non-veg tikkas. The Kathi rolls are really yum and they come cheap. The shops open till almost 12:00 a.m. and till the end serve you hot stuff.

CHAI & MUSKA BUN AT GANPATI PLAZA: Gulab Ji Chai Waala located Opposite Ganpati Plaza (M.I.Road) serves yummy chai (MasalaTea) 10 INR, Bun and Muska (butter)- 20 INR & Bun Muska Samosa- 30 INR. This is a great street eating place, always packed with people and serves till 6 P.M. If you are a tea person then this is a must try place.

CHAI AT SAHU'S: Located in the walled city at Chaura Rasta, Sahu is very Famous for his tea and day long visits by all classes of people. Serves a very sweet and cardamom rich Tea. worth a try!

KULFI: The Best Kulfi that I have had in Jaipur is at Shri Pandit Kulfi Bhandar at Gangori Bazaar (Near Aggarwal furniture) in the old city and Famous matka Kulfi, of Pandit's Kulfi at Raja Park .
Famous Matka kulfi

They serve the kulfi on a leaf- very rustic!!

AUNTY’S PAV BHAJI: Aunty's cafe located on the street parallel to Park-plaza Hotel, C-Scheme is this great street place serving an array of things like Chowmein, Indian Pizzas, Soups, Burgers, Sandwiches, Chinese stuff, South Indian dishes etc. However, this place is really famous for its Pav-Bhaji. Again a famous street food place so no frills just cheap street food.
The entire street is a part of aunty's cafe

All kinds of street foods are served here

But definitely not for those with a weak stomach

PAV BHAJI STALL NEAR BIRLA MANDIR: Located just opposite Birla-Mandir the entire street is lined by loads of carts serving Pav-Bhaji and all of them claim to be the original Pandit Pav bhaji stall. No clue which one is. All of them taste great. Cheap and really lovely Pav Bhaji.

GOLGAPPA & KULFI FALUDA AT BAPU BAZAAR: Right at the end on the chauraha (where 4 roads meet) is this very famous Golgappa wala and for kulfi faluda Shop No. 28 on link road is the place. Makes for a great street experience cause of all the shopping and people around.

Just walk on this row and after 2/3 shops is the famous kulfi shop

Kulfi
FALAHAAR SARAOGI MANSION: Located on the entry to Saraogi Mansion. Falahaar serves sabudan khichdi, Fruit cream, Sabudana dahi vada, Makkhaniya lassi, Mango Kalakand, shrikahnd. All the food ranges between 25 to 30 INR per plate. Neat, healthy and tasty!
